London Calling

London Calling - Clare Lydon 2.5 stars

Reviewing a Clare Lydon book is always a little confounding because here’s the thing: we thoroughly enjoy her writing. We love her very Brit humour. But we aren’t big fans of her characters. And the romance is *shrug*. But the writing rocks. So, therein lies the being confounded part.

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe - Fannie Flagg This is an all-time classic in lesbian romance. In fact, it can just be termed as an all-time classic. It is a truly dazzling work of non-linear narrative – one of the most difficult types of writing to carry off.

Tell Me Again How a Crush Should Feel - Sara Farizan 2.5 stars

This is a typical high-school coming-out books albeit with a twist inasmuch the narrator and MC is a Persian-American, Leila. Leila kinda knows and admits to herself she is gay, but is wondering how to come-out to her parents, given the way their society is. Enter hot, new, sophisticated girl, Saskia who seems to be interested in Leila too. Saskia keeps Leila off-balance by blowing hot and blowing cold. In the meanwhile, suddenly, Leila’s old friend but currently-not-friend cool girl Lisa begins to grow closer to Leila again.

Departure from the Script

Departure from the Script - Jae Femme actress (not yet celebrity) Amanda Clark is closeted, but very certain that she has a ‘type’ i.e. femmes like her. Butch is certainly not her type. Photographer, Michelle Osinski, is as butch as they come (enough to be mistaken to be a guy more than once) and equally certain that actresses are not her ‘type’.

Scaredy Cat

Scaredy Cat - Robin Alexander Robin Alexander’s characters are unfailingly engaging and likeable. The MCs in this one, Blake Taylor and Quinn Scott are no exception – and awfully likeable. However, under all the humour, in this one, Alexander tackles some not-so-light issues as well.

A Taste Of Sin

A Taste Of Sin - Fiona Zedde With Zedde you can be assured of luscious women and almost suffocating treacly sex. Which may or may not be a good thing, depending on what you’re looking for. The emotionless couplings and group sex doesn’t work for us.

Winter Jacket

Winter Jacket - Eliza Lentzski 3.5 stars

It is so difficult to say something about a book where everything is great except one pivotal scene. One scene that throws questions about the romance and makes us really dislike a hitherto okay character.
